Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang is the foundational concept of Eastern philosophy describing how opposite forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world.

What is Yin and Yang?

Yin and Yang (陰陽) is the foundational dualistic concept in Chinese philosophy, describing how seemingly opposite forces are actually complementary, interconnected, and interdependent. This principle underlies all of Eastern metaphysics, from Four Pillars of Destiny and Feng Shui to traditional Chinese medicine.

Yin-Yang in BaZi

In Four Pillars of Destiny, every Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch carries either a Yin or Yang polarity. Yang stems (Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren) express bold, outward, and assertive qualities, while Yin stems (Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui) express subtle, inward, and flexible qualities. The overall Yin-Yang balance in a chart shapes a person's fundamental temperament.

The Principle of Transformation

A key insight of Yin-Yang theory is that these forces are not static — they constantly transform into each other. Yang at its peak becomes Yin, and vice versa. This principle of cyclical change is central to understanding how fortune shifts over time in Eastern divination systems.
