Chinese Zodiac

The Chinese Zodiac is a 12-year cycle of animal signs used across East Asia for personality analysis, compatibility, and fortune telling.

What is the Chinese Zodiac?

The Chinese Zodiac (十二支, Sheng Xiao) is a 12-year cycle in which each year is associated with an animal sign: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Deeply embedded in East Asian culture, it is used for personality profiling, compatibility assessment, and annual fortune predictions.

Compatibility Groups

The twelve signs form natural compatibility groups:

  • Three Harmonies (San He): Rat-Dragon-Monkey (Water), Tiger-Horse-Dog (Fire), Rabbit-Goat-Pig (Wood), Snake-Rooster-Ox (Metal)
  • Six Harmonies (Liu He): Rat-Ox, Tiger-Pig, Rabbit-Dog, Dragon-Rooster, Snake-Monkey, Horse-Goat
  • Clashes (Chong): Signs opposite each other in the cycle (Rat-Horse, Ox-Goat, etc.)

Beyond the Year Sign

While popular zodiac readings focus only on the birth year, this is a simplified view. In Four Pillars of Destiny, the Earthly Branches (which include the zodiac animals) appear in all four pillars — year, month, day, and hour — providing a far more nuanced and accurate analysis than the birth year alone.
