Luck Pillar

Luck Pillars (Da Yun) are 10-year cycles derived from the Month Pillar that reveal the major themes and energy shifts throughout a person's life.

What is a Luck Pillar?

A Luck Pillar (大運, Da Yun) represents a 10-year period of prevailing energy in a person's life. Derived from the Month Pillar of the BaZi chart, Luck Pillars map out the broad themes, opportunities, and challenges that unfold across different life stages.

How Luck Pillars Are Calculated

Starting from the Month Pillar, Luck Pillars progress either forward or backward through the sexagenary cycle, depending on the person's gender and the Yin-Yang polarity of their Year Stem. The age at which the first Luck Pillar begins varies for each individual, typically between ages 1 and 9.

Reading a Luck Pillar

Each Luck Pillar contains a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch:

  • Heavenly Stem — influences the first five years of the decade
  • Earthly Branch — influences the latter five years

The element and Ten God relationship of the Luck Pillar to the Day Master determines what life area is activated during that period.

Life Planning with Luck Pillars

Luck Pillars provide a roadmap for strategic life planning. A Wealth-element Luck Pillar may bring financial opportunities, while an Officer-element period could bring career advancement or increased responsibility. When a Luck Pillar supplies the element most needed by the chart (the "Useful God"), it often marks a period of significant positive transformation.
